Study finds CD248 protein may prevent, reverse diabetes.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Sweden’s Karolinska Institute found reducing or eliminating a specific protein (CD248) in the fat cells of mice may not only prevent onset of Type 2 diabetes but also appears to reverse the disease in mice.
Using genetically modified mice that lacked glycoprotein CD248 in their cells, researchers noticed the mice were protected from developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, even while being fed high fat diets.
These findings may lead to effective new treatments, and work is currently underway to better understand the function of the protein to tailor suitable drugs for Type 2 diabetes.
